Wellness and Fitness Classes

Harry P. Leu Gardens offers a wide array of classes for horticulture, landscaping, fine arts, and specialties all year round for kids and adults. Please call the Education Line 407.246.3621 or email linda.schmidt@cityoforlando.net for further information.

Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available to FNGLA Certified Professionals upon request.

Pre-registration and pre-payment are required for all classes and must be completed by 5:00 pm the last weekday before the class. You may register by calling Linda Schmidt 407.246.3621 or fill out the pre-registration form and submit by fax 407.246.2849, email linda.schmidt@cityoforlando.net or mail 1920 N. Forest Avenue, FL, Orlando 32803. 

Participants must withdraw from classes at least seven days prior to the start of class in order to receive a full refund or credit. If we must cancel a class, we will make every effort to inform you prior to the class time, and you will receive a full refund or credit.

Only those registered for the class will be permitted in the classroom. Childcare services are not provided.

Seven Steps to a Healthier Home

Your family spends a lot of time at home -shouldn’t it be a non-toxic environment to support your family’s health? Learn seven quick and easy (and sane!) steps to take to start creating a healthier home for you and your family. Discover which kinds of food storage items you should avoid, and which ones are safe. Discover which painless switch of a common household item reduces your exposure to over 100 toxic chemicals in the bathroom. Learn how to harness the natural power of our Florida sunshine to kill one of the most common allergy-causing problems in your home. You’ll walk away with easy and often inexpensive ideas to create a healthy oasis at home for you and your loved ones.

Artisan Bread in a Blink-Session 4

In this continuation of our bread series, you will make a one pound loaf of bread that is associated with Russia and caviar. This version will create a pumpernickel bread without true pumpernickel flour. Hands-on, recipe included. Class limited to 12

Sunset Yoga

Each week we will meet on the Garden House lawn overlooking Lake Rowena for a moving meditation that focuses on breath, balance and flexibility. As the sun sets we will ease into gentle yoga postures and conclude with a blissful relaxation. All levels welcome. Please bring a yoga mat, strap, water and towel. (Class may be moved inside due to inclement weather.)

Designing Fresh Florals

This seminar will show you how to successfully brighten your home after the holidays. From fresh cut flower bouquets to more stylized arrangements, you’ll learn that proportion is key to achieving the look you want. Please bring your own scissors, vase and flowers or you can purchase flowers at the time of class (please indicate if you wish to purchase flowers when you register.)

Preserving Foods at Home 3: Freezing and Drying

Come learn new ideas and basic food safety methods for freezing and drying foods. This class includes new ideas for preparing your own frozen dinners, and how to use drying for saving space and utilizing all your fresh fruits and vegetables with zero waste.

Indian Vegetarian Soups

We are glad to welcome back our favorite chef from India, Urmila Zope. She will show you how to prepare a classic chickpea soup and vegetable pullao rice. Enjoy masala chai tea with ginger and mint as you learn more about Indian herbs and spices and how to use them. Recipes included.

Create a Healthy and Restful Bedroom

Want a better night's sleep? It might start with creating a healthier, non-toxic bedroom. Learn the simple ways to create a better bedroom for sleep and for health for every member of your family. From bedding to indoor allergies and plenty of other things that could be keeping you from getting enough “zzz's”, we'll uncover the physical barriers that could be preventing you from receiving a good night's sleep.

Chocolate Bliss: Truffles and Churros

This Valentine’s Day, treat your sweetie to homemade truffles made with love. In this hands-on class, get ready to shape, dust and dip your own truffles! Often synonymous with luxury and wealth, purchased truffles can cost more than twice as much as those you make yourself. Then, watch a demonstration of churros in a brandy infused hot dipping chocolate. Class limited to 12 Menus included.

Partner Yoga on the Lawn
Saturday, February 11
1 - 3 p.m.

Fee: $30 per couple (Members $25 per couple)

During this outdoor workshop, you and your partner will have the opportunity to breathe, connect, stretch and smile together. Some yoga experience will be helpful as we will transform traditional yoga into postures that can only be formed with another body. Bring your friend, partner or family member as anyone can partner. Please bring a mat for each person and an open mind for a fun time! (Class may be moved inside due to inclement weather.)

Classic Indian Chicken & Rice Dinner

During this class, Ms. Zope will prepare a traditional chicken and rice, cauliflower and a cucumber rayata. You not only will have a fabulous lunch and masala chai tea to sip, but will leave with the recipes to recreate your favorites.

Hearty Irish Winter Soups and Broths
Wednesday, March 7

Fee: $25 (Members $20)

In Ireland soups and broths are a filling meal in their own right. The Irish's secrets to a great soup are to use fresh vegetables and to make it in plenty of time so that it has all day to simmer away and fill the house with those mouth watering aromas. Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, join the Garden’s director first in the vegetable and herb gardens to collect fresh produce and then finish in the kitchen of the Idea Garden pavilion. Discover parsnip and apple soup, Irish skink, Irish farm house broth, and the traditional potato soup.

Lean dough breads are those made without significant eggs, fat, dairy or sweetener! Lean dough bakes well without burning or drying out at high temperatures. In this hands-on class we will create a crisp pita bread bowl and then fill it with a green salad. Recipes included. Class limited to 12.

Pierogies and Cabbage Rolls Made Easy

In this hands-on class we will create two famous Polish dishes: potato and onion pierogies and heavenly sweet and sour stuffed cabbage rolls. Recipes included. Class Limit: 15

Hypertufa
Saturday, March 31
10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Fee: $65 (Members $60)

Wear your old clothes and bring your imagination! Hypertufa planters grace the gardens of Europe and will add character to your yard, along with saving you money on pots and providing the best possible growing environment. Learn the technique and take home four completed planters of various sizes and styles. All supplies are included, along with molds to keep and material to add color to your masterpieces. Please bring your lunch.
