Horticulture Manager | Full-time with benefits | $56,451.20 – $87,526.40 Annually

The Horticulture Manager serves as the horticultural expert, team leader, and creator for the 50-acre botanical experience at Harry P. Leu Gardens. The Horticulture Manager reports to the Executive Director and leads a team of a dozen staff, outside services contractors, and volunteers to achieve excellence in public horticultural management for the Gardens.  Working with the Executive Director and other departments, this position participates in guiding the strategic goals of the Gardens horticulture displays and master site planning for visitor experiences, events, and programs; provides management of and empowers horticulture staff and department budget, supplies, and reports; implements horticultural standards, best and sustainable practices of public garden care; works with internal and external community partners; ensures the safety and security of staff and public through training and certifications to handle horticultural materials (i.e., fertilizer and chemicals).

Preferred candidates should have a passion for horticultural and landscape design, maintenance, and care; knowledge of botany, plant production, greenhouse management, conservation, and landscape design, equipment, supplies and techniques.  Applicants should be collaborative, organized, and experienced managing large scale horticultural and landscaping projects, sites, staff, and contractors; possess excellent verbal and written communication skills; have the ability to work with irrigation systems and water management, carry out horticultural designs and installations, public gardens best practices, policies, and procedures; have the ability and passion to work with wide variety of audiences from multicultural and social backgrounds, problem solve, and work on their own and with a team to accomplish tasks. This position’s schedule is 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., with night and weekend work for rotations, special events and programs.

Bachelor’s Degree required in horticultural field, garden management, or related field with 3 years of experience in a similar role with progressive supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  A valid Florida Driver’s License is required. Florida Pesticide Application License is required within 90 days of employment.

Horticulture Specialist | Full-time with benefits | $40,976.00 – $52,229.00 Annually

The Horticulture Specialists are responsible for the design, cultivation, care, and management of large-scale collections of botanical species of trees, palms, fruits, vegetables, shrubs, groundcovers, flowers, ornamental plants, and hardscapes, reporting to the Horticulture Manager. Such duties include planning and designing specialized areas and thematic displays throughout the Gardens seasonally employing Best Management Practices in horticulture. This position requires strong knowledge of plant science, and plant care techniques including pest control, soil management, and disease mitigation. Oversees staff, volunteer, and community service teams including scheduling, training, and supervising. Interacts with the visiting public and assists with Gardens special events, programs, and activities. The Horticulture Specialist may work in a variety of outdoor settings, such as the Gardens greenhouse and nursery under moderate supervision, and work is evaluated for quality control regularly through observations, discussions, and results obtained.

Associate’s Degree in Horticulture or related field, and one (1) year of experience in Horticulture or related field; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. A valid Florida Driver’s License is required. Florida Pesticide Application License is required within 90 days of employment.
